Quantities of barbecue starter fluids in Sweden, turn-over in tonnes

Source: Products Register, KemI, 2010.
Barbecue starter fluid is used to set fire to charcoal in outdoor grills. The annual use in Sweden was 6,000 tonnes in 2010 according to the Products Register.
Since 2005 the quantity and number of products have increased considerably. This could be due to the fact that more companies performed their duty to report to the register.

The substances used in barbecue starter fluids

Most starter fluids consist of liquid paraffins, which are purified petroleum products consisting of linear chains of hydrocarbons with 10 to 14 carbon atoms. About 25 per cent of all starter fluids are solvent naphthas. The share of starter fluids that consist of solvent naphthas has increased whereas the share of normal paraffins has decreased. This can be an effect of more low-price products being registered.
Starter fluids made from petroleum hydrocarbons are only to be sold in containers with child resistant fastenings.
Alcohols and fatty acids esters, mostly from rape seed, are presented as alternatives to the petroleum-based starter fluids.
